Hey, it’s Dan (with my dad, Steve)

Welcome to the very first MBMC issue!

This issue got a little nerdy (shocker). Here’s what we dug into:

  • 💡 The S&P 500 “diversification” myth — 12 companies basically run the show.

  • 📊 Buffett’s 15x rule vs. today’s ETFs — why Dad calls half the market “overpriced.”

  • 🏢 Why boring might be the new sexy — JEPI, VTI, and REITs that pay you to wait.

👉 All that and more below.

Money Concept: How to Evaluate an ETF

Dan (Millennial):

“Most people just buy SPY in their 401k and call it diversification. But here’s the kicker — 12 companies make up 40% of it.”

Steve (Boomer):

“Exactly. That’s why you look under the hood — valuation, growth, dividends, and weighting matter, even for ETFs. Take Buffett’s 15x rule: a lot of big names are way overpriced compared to their growth. That overpricing trickles right into the ETFs holding them.”

📈 Example ETFs (Simplified)

  • SPY (S&P 500): Broad coverage, but heavy in giants like Apple, Nvidia, and Microsoft.

  • JEPI: Focused on income, using covered calls to generate higher yield.

  • VTI: The total market fund — all U.S. stocks, low fees, steady growth.

Takeaway: Don’t just buy an ETF by its name. Look under the hood: weighting, valuation, dividends, and fees all matter.
